History of the hotel industry

19.09.2022

As it turns out, the history of hospitality goes all the way back to the XXX century BC. Already in ancient times, places were created where residents could rent a room, take shelter from the sun or spend the night in a safe space.
Ancient Rome saw the establishment of taverns, which were maintained entirely by the state. Depending on the stay, the depots were called "mansiones" when the guest planned to stay longer and "stationes" for those arriving for 1 or 2 nights. Such inns could only be used by people with special "diploma" or "trattoria" privileges - these were cards entitling them to stay.

Xandenochium arose in the year 325 in Nice. This was influenced by the Council held there, which called for the introduction of guesthouses for travelers. A few hundred years later Charlemagne ordered the introduction of the possibility of accommodation in monasteries and churches with the obligation of hospitality - thus the first hospices were established, which had nothing to do with the function they perform today.

In 1317, hotels began to be classified according to the wealth of their residents. There were 16 inns of different standards in Venice, they were: inns for the elite - le case, for the less wealthy - le hostarie, and for the poorer - le caneve and taverne.

Termont is the first hotel corresponding to today's hotel assumptions to be built in Boston. It had 170 1-2 bed rooms with toilet facilities. Menu cards have appeared in the restaurants. There were also positions for receptionists, baggage handlers and messengers.

The elite hotel industry began to develop in Europe in the 19th century. It was a time of the emergence of elegant guesthouses with a residential character. These can include, for example, the Ritz hotels in Paris and Madrid, the Savoy in London and the Astoria in St. Petersburg.

The beginning of hotel enterprises that changed the course of history for good was the American entrepreneur M.Statler, who founded a hotel construction company in 1907. This is how the Buffalo Statler hotel came to be.
The United States has become a true cradle of hotel services and the development of companies establishing hotel chains. In 1940, Sheraton and Hilton appeared, while in 1952, also in the US, the Holiday Inn hotel system was established. The second half of the 20th century and the first half of the 21st saw a rapid development of hotel services in very different forms and of varying standards.

In addition, we have prepared a surprise for guests of New Skanpol Hotel. We invite you to the opening of a display case with memorabilia from old Kolobrzeg (Kolberg), donated by Mr. Ernst Schröder of the Heimatkreis Kolberg organization. The exhibits come from the founder's private collection and can be admired in the hotel's lobby. The symbolic opening of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday, 21.09 at 2:00 pm. The exhibition will be periodically exchanged and supplemented with new exhibits.
