History and Charm of 18 March Square in Kołobrzeg: Reminiscences from the Past

03.06.2024

March 18th Square in Kołobrzeg, located in the immediate vicinity of our hotel, is a place of rich history and exceptional charm. Designed in 1880 by the gardener Heinrich Martens, it was meant to be a representative city square, which fully reflects its character.

At the beginning of the square's existence, its shape and arrangement were inspired by the style of a French garden, with an elegant fountain in the center. Various species of trees were planted around the park, creating a green oasis in the heart of the city. Historically, from the direction of today's Armii Krajowej Street, a monument commemorating German soldiers who died on various fronts was erected.

The square has gone through many name changes over the course of its history. For many years, it was named Emperor's Square (German: Kaiserplatz), thus commemorating Emperor Wilhelm I. At the end of the 1930s, it was named Adolf Hitler Square (German: Adolf Hitlerplatz).

It is worth noting that March 18th Square even survived the urban battle of 1945. After the war, it was given its current name, and thanks to revitalization, it became an even more picturesque corner of the city. New trees and bushes were planted, restoring its original splendor. A monument to the Gratitude to Polish Liberators is now located on the pedestal of the former monument to German soldiers.

Today, March 18th Square is not only a place of rich history but also the center of social and cultural life in Kołobrzeg. Walking through its alleys, one can feel the unique atmosphere of the city, where history mixes with modernity, creating an unforgettable ambiance.

If you are staying at our hotel, we warmly encourage you to take a walk in March 18th Square. It's an extraordinary place that is definitely worth visiting during your stay in Kołobrzeg. 🌳🏛️✨
